Domain carries a supreme importance in the internet technical world. Every server has an IP address and DNS that is domain name server act as a link between domain and the server where domain name server reflects the IP address of server. IP address is internet protocol that addresses. Every domain name is connected to the server in which IP plays an important role.

An IP Address is nothing but a particular number for your computer. Internet protocol is an address through which other computer can contact the computer. On connection to the internet the ip address may change, or there is also a possibility that the IP address remains constant.  IP lookup for domain is used for forward lookup and reverse lookup to be done in router. Whenever one needs the information about the host, server location, name servers IP look up comes into practice.
IP look up mainly has two working levels, following are the both

  1.   Forward look up - This is mainly used to resolve name to ip
  2. Reverse look up – This is use to resolve IP to domain name.
IP look up helps to trace many things related to the domain. The detail information can be gained from the IP look up. Information like The IP domain-lookup command is enabled by default. The purpose of this command is to assist the administrator resolve names into IP addresses so they may telnet to remote devices. This seems on the face of it a good setting; the issues are that the system does not understand the difference between a valid hostname and a typo.

Domain IP look up command is a default command. This command allows the router to presume that whichever non-keyword is being entered in the command is supposed to give an output into an IP address. It is mostly observed that, most people disable this command as it can be a recurring botheration for the people who have the tendency to mistype the words.

 Syntax used in this is “Router(config)#ip domain-lookup”.
As we are aware that the router attempts to resolve the unrecognized command as an ip address, and takes awhile to do so. During the time of switch configuration the command is disabled with "no IP dns look up"
